Listen! Connecticut symphonic/technical deathcore giants Shadow of Intent dropped “The Gathering of All” on us out of the blue this Friday, featuring a surprise guest vocal contribution from none other than Slaughter To Prevail’s Alex Terrible. It hasn’t been too long since Shadow of Intent’s Halo-obsessed Primordial kicked our asses this past February, and “The Gathering of All” doesn’t present any major deviations from the debut’s sound apart from a shift in production, which was handled entirely by Duerr and guitarist/drum programmer Chris Wiseman. There is a more pronounced black metal texture this time around, apparent in Duerr’s upper register and the symphonic elements of their sound, but on the whole, “Gathering” reaffirms Shadow of Intent’s strengths as their driving tempos, dynamic song structures, and impeccable guitarwork all make grand returns. The vocals are expectedly monstrous across the board, with Terrible spitting nothing but filth for the entire midsection of the track and vocalist Ben Duerr not only holding his own, but proving his worth as one of the best up-and-comers in the game. Whether or not this track is a one-off single or a prelude to something more remains to be seen, but for now, “The Gathering of All” will more than hold us over until Shadow of Intent’s next move. -Brian L.
