Graf Orlock - “Crime Traveler”
Buy on Bandcamp
Graf Orlock: a grindcore band from Los Angeles, California, who often use audio clips from various action movies. I can easily say that this was the first grindcore band I listened to since I was told about them before I was even into metal in general. I later remembered the name after I started to really explore metal, and man, do these guys thrash.
Now, after they released “Destination Time Today,” the last in a trilogy of releases based on a screenplay the band wrote (that ultimately got them expelled from UCLA), I didn't hear about the band for years and thought they had broken up. Apparently, I was wrong. I was scrolling through Facebook and saw an article saying they released the “Trailer EP,” which I enjoyed for the most part. The release also had a different vocalist, and I have no idea when that happened except maybe during that period I thought they weren’t a band.
I wish I enjoyed this album more. I really do. All I can say is that I found the entire album boring and there weren’t any distinguishing features to tell songs apart. Even the clips aren’t that great. And I don’t just mean the clips are bad, but how they tie songs together is nothing special. I honestly can not look back and pick out a song or a moment that I necessarily liked. After my listening, I went back to “Destination Time Yesterday” just to see if I had grown out of it, but still enjoy it. Maybe not as much, but it’s still top-notch compared to this.
I do feel like I have to mention that it's not that the album is bad, but I just found it lackluster. Also, it wasn’t like I had super high expectations for this album and built it up in my head, since I just learned about this a few days ago.
If you’re a super fan of Graf Orlock or grindcore, give it a listen. If not, then maybe consider passing on this.
